Sharon Schierling of Refined Space – Professional Organizers

Company's mission: To inspire balance through organization.

Products and/or services: We provide organizational services for clients in their home, office, or home office.  We also offer our clients information on time management, assistance with understanding their organizational style and systems that help clients maintain order and balance in all aspects of their lives. We target anyone who wants to gain control over their “stuff,” time or environment.

When and why did you join NAWBO? I joined in June 2006 to meet other women-business owners and develop relationships with people who are going through the same kinds of professional challenges I experience as a business owner.

Committee involvement: Not yet, but I am interested in getting involved with NAWBO.

Impact NAWBO has had on your business or professional development:Just knowing there are other women building a business and meeting the same challenges I face has been an encouragement to me.

The best advice you've received: When I was a little girl I used to visit my Aunt Lizzie every summer.  She was a hard taskmaster who taught me to “do it now,” never procrastinate.  Good advice for all of life’s challenges.

Advice or strategies: There are very few truly “new ideas” out there regarding business and business building.  I believe that some of the old values that have been around since time began prove to be the most helpful in the long run.  The best advice to give anyone, regardless of what they do for a living, is to treat everyone the way you want to be treated and your company will never lack for business and you will have many friends.

What brings you joy in your work? I always find it interesting that we always take for granted the gifts that we have been given.  Organizing is natural for me, it comes easily and I actually don’t even think about it that much.  To me it is sort of a “non-talent.”   It is who I am, I didn’t have to study any books or take any classes, it’s just part of my personality.  When I purchased my business, and began to work with people for whom it is not natural to be organized, I realized that my “non-talent” was really helping other people.  My clients are always so excited and grateful for the help and encouragement I give them when a job is completed.  It brings me joy to know that I make a difference in people’s lives by sharing such a simple and mundane talent.

What brings you joy in your personal life? Or What are your interests/hobbies? I have been married for thirty-two years and my family brings me the greatest joy in all my life. We have two children, who are successful, well-rounded people, both personally, and in their chosen professions. I consider it a blessing that I am “friends” with both my children. I am also a big dog-lover and enjoy working from home and being around my three dogs. I am truly blessed! I like to exercise, read, crochet, do creative memories and spend time with my family.

Charity support: Yes, aside from my church, I volunteer my time at Insight for Living. Since I have computer/graphics experience in my background, I volunteer to do whatever office type duties for which they need an extra set of hands or computer expertise. I also offer my organizational services for various projects from time to time.

Although we support several charities financially, I like to give my time because it helps to feel “connected” to a charity. I recognize that my time is a gift to me, and sharing it with others is as important as sharing our financial blessings.

Other organizations: I am a member of the Frisco Chamber, and the Women Enhancing Business (WEB) group within the chamber.

Book recommendations: I read a lot of books and usually the last one I have read is the best. Cure for the Common Life – Living in Your Sweet Spot by Max Lucado. Your Best Life Now – 7 Steps to Living at Your Full Potential – Joel Osteen.

What else would you like your NAWBO chapter and members to know about you? I am a pretty uncomplicated person. I am what is known as a WYSIWYG. What you see is what you get. I enjoy people and I am genuinely interested in their lives.
