We also coach businesses outside
the industry that would like to tap into wellness-related opportunities-for
example, financial planners who want to expand into life planning.
When and
why did you join NAWBO?
I joined NAWBO in February 2005. I feel it's important for women
business owners to support each other through organizations like
NAWBO. Many of my female clients still encounter bias because
of their gender. Organizations like NAWBO provide support that
might not be available elsewhere.
Committee
involvement: I'm hoping to get involved in the Mastermind
program.
Impact
has NAWBO had on your business or professional development: As a new member, I'm hoping to develop
strong relationships with other women entrepreneurs so that we
can benefit through shared experiences... what has worked for
us and just as important, what has not.
The best advice you've received:
One of the best pieces of advice I've ever seen was from John
Foster Dulles, who said "The measure of success is not whether
you have a tough problem to deal with, but whether it's the same
problem you had last year."
Advice or strategies: I don't
know who deserves credit for this analogy, but I like to remind
clients that life is like a game with five balls. One ball is
rubber. It represents work. Drop it, and it bounces back. The
other balls are glass. They represent family, friends, health,
and integrity. Drop them and they're permanently damaged, possibly
shattered. It's important to lead a successful life, not just
a successful business.
What
brings you joy in your work? Businesses in the wellness industry
tend to be run by people who are enthusiastic and passionate about
what they do. So I spend my days working with people who are extremely
positive and upbeat about their companies; it really energizes
me to help them realize their vision by building a successful,
sustainable business.
What brings
you joy in your personal life? Or What are your interests/hobbies? My husband and I will celebrate
our 22nd wedding anniversary in May! Also, I love to read and
travel, visit art festivals, and snooze in hammocks.
Charity support: The
Radial Group has a strong commitment to community service. We
select two small wellness businesses each year as recipients of
Radial's Entrepreneur Award. This award entitles the recipient
to pro bono business coaching for a six-month period. We currently
sponsor a pedometer-based fitness program at a low-income school.
Other organizations:
I'm active in IHRSA (the largest health club trade association),
the Medical Fitness Association, Wellness Councils of America,
the Institute for Health and Productivity Management, the International
Council on Active Aging, and IDEA.
Book recommendations:
The best business book I've read this year is David Allen's "Getting
Things Done." It's a fresh approach to keeping tabs on all of
the incoming to-dos that most of us face every day. While it won't
prioritize your work for you, it will free up mindshare by increasing
your confidence that nothing important is falling through the
cracks.
