Over the years Darla Beggs’ career has taken her from Texas to one coast then over to the other side of the country with a stop for a time in America’s Heartland.  Thankfully, she and her husband have found their way back to the Dallas/Ft Worth area and our Chapter is honored to have her as our new Director of Corporate Partners.

Beggs says, “After spending many years working in sales, marketing and management in Corporate America for companies such as SWBT, AT&T, The Travelers and Principal Insurance my husband and I returned to the DFW area in search of business opportunities. I purchased Abba Staffing in 2006 and joined NAWBO in 2008.”

Abba Staffing provides staffing services (staff augmentation, contract-to-hire, and direct placement) and small business consulting for clients throughout the United States. Their core competencies include Administrative/Clerical, Finance/ Accounting, IT, Project Mangers, Contract Administrators, Health Care providers and their office staff for clients of all sizes for a multitude of diverse entities such as Government (Federal, State, Local), Hospitals, Transportation/Shipping, Real Estate and Christian Ministries.

If this didn’t keep Beggs busy enough, she also owns Tierra Resources–a mineral leasing company–and Beggs’ husband, Gary, and his son own AED Group–a Land Man and mineral acquisition company.

Gary and Darla have been married for 26 years.  She has two grown step-children, Valerie and Matthew, and two crazy Yorkies named Allie and Roxy.

In her “free” time (yes, she put that word in quotes), Beggs enjoys visiting museums and galleries of all types, and she says interior design is her inner calling.  She loves to read, enjoys music, walking, cooking, the Dallas Cowboys and spending time with her family.

The woman featured in our Partner spotlight this month claims she has a passion for “Pot Stirring and Stealthy Revolution.”   A founding NAWBO D/FW Chapter board member and former past-president, this dynamic go-getter will inspire you to join the "revolution."

Wanda Brice is CEO of The Women’s Museum.  It is a Smithsonian Affiliate, is a nationally chartered Museum.  It is the ONLY comprehensive women’s history museum in America.  Women’s history (much of it untold!) celebrates, inspires and educates.

Brice states, “Our educational programming targets girls aged 10 – 18 and women of all ages and interests.  The Texas Girls State Fair and Leadership America are our two flagship programs.  We provide educational and entertaining programming around all our featured exhibits, which change four times a year.

As part of the organizing DFW NAWBO Board, NAWBO president and NAWBO Corporate Sponsor, Brice says she relished her participation with dynamic women business owners.

She explains, “I found the place to indulge my passion for Pot Stirring and Stealthy Revolution. Along with trail blazers (more like flame throwers) such as Dr. Aggie Jordan DeLaurenti, Doris Thomas, Valerie Freeman, Anita Porco, NAWBO members opened many doors for women in business. "

Brice has been the recipient of many awards over the years.  Recent awards lincludeThe Athena Award, The Dallas Business Journal’s Outstanding Women Award, Community Service Award from the Association of Women in Communication and the upcoming Northwood University Distinguished Women Award.  While she was in NAWBO, she received the National Public Policy Advocate Award from NAWBO.

She and her husband recently bought a farm on 105 beautiful acres in far northeast Texas.

She says, “We bought it as a retreat from traffic, cell phones, email and noise.  It is a perfect retreat from business – or it was until at a meeting with our financial planner, she asked me what kind of income the farm might produce.”  Brice says her entrepreneurial wheels began to spin. . .!!

This client alert is the first in a series of four. This first alert explores various tax issues that will drive some business owners to sell their businesses in 2010 as opposed to selling in later years. The remaining three alerts describe many of the steps a business owner should consider to prepare his or her business for sale. These include the sale process, the evaluation of a purchase offer, the importance of a confidentiality agreement, the role of a letter of intent, structuring a transaction, and the sale documents that "close" a transaction. Because every transaction is different, the general principles provided in these alerts must be adapted for your particular business and industry.

Wanda Brice, President NAWBO DFW Chapter 1991-1992

Our own NAWBO D/FW Chapter past President, Wanda Brice, has won the Dallas Business Journal's Women in Business Award.  Brice is the CEO of the Women's Museum.  She was one of our featured speakers at the recent NAWBO Gala, "Where we have Been." 

According to the DBJ, the Women's Museum, "an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, wasn't living up to its potential; it had no formal programs and little visibility. Brice was brought in to oversee the nonprofit and figure out ways to incease its popularity and awareness.  She subsequently developed educational and empowering programs for girls and women."

Congrats to Wanda Brice for this well-deserved recognition!

There have been two significant new developments in the regulation of greenhouse gases (“GHG”).  One is the long awaited introduction of new draft legislation that sponsors hope will bridge the disagreements that have prevented the passage of comprehensive GHG legislation.  The other is the issuance of EPA’s greenhouse gas tailoring rule, the final piece of EPA’s multiple promulgations to commence control of GHG from stationary sources.
