Meet Our Own Enterprising Woman of the Year 2011

Posted on February 10, 2011

Congratulations to NAWBO’s own Sherry Green, President of Technology Team! She was recently named one of the Winners of the 2011 Enterprising Women of the Year, awarded by Enterprising Women magazine.

To be considered, Sherry and the other award recipients had to demonstrate they have fast-growth businesses, mentor or actively support other women and girls involved in entrepreneurship, and stand out as leaders in their communities. Many of these women are also leaders in key organizations that support the growth of women’s entrepreneurship (just like Sherry!).

Sherry and the other winners will be recognized at a gala dinner held in their honor during the 9th Annual Enterprising Women of the Year Awards Celebration in March in Boca Raton, Florida.

You can see a list of winners on the Enterprising Women website.

Join us in congratulating Sherry Green for this outstanding, and well-deserved, award! Way to go, Sherry! You make us all very proud!

The DNA of GINA: The EEOC Issues Final Regulations

Effective January 10, 2011

Check out this Alert from our partners Haynes and Boone, LLP:

On November 9, 2010, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (“EEOC”) issued its much-anticipated final rule implementing Title II of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (“GINA”), which applies to all employers covered by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (“Title VII”), namely, employers with fifteen or more employees, as well as unions, employment agencies and labor management training programs. This final rule is effective on January 10, 2011, and prohibits the use of genetic information in the employment context, restricts an employer’s deliberate acquisition of genetic information, requires employers to maintain employee genetic information as confidential, and strictly limits employers from disclosing genetic information.

SEC Proposes New Disclosure & Reporting Requirements for Investment Advisers

Posted on December 28, 2010

Check out this News Alert provided by our corporate partner, Haynes and Boone, LLP:

On November 19, 2010, the Securities and Exchange Commission (the “SEC”) proposed new rules and amendments to existing rules and Form ADV under the Investment Advisers Act of 1940, as amended (the “Advisers Act”), that would implement various provisions contained as part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (the “Dodd-Frank Act”). The SEC’s proposed rules and amendments would, among other things, clarify the eligibility of advisers to register (or remain registered) with the SEC, modify the way advisers calculate their assets under management, establish reporting requirements applicable to certain exempt reporting advisers and require additional disclosures in Form ADV.

Change is on the Way from the NLRB

Posted on December 6, 2010

Check out this alert from our Partner Haynes and Boone, LLP:

Change is on the Way from the NLRB

The Obama-appointed NLRB has now issued its first significant batch of decisions serving notice, as is typical in the transition from one administration to the next, of a shift in the interpretation of the labor laws. The decisions include a new standard regarding secondary boycotts and union bannering; potential reconsideration of prior precedent; and a differing application of the law to facts than the predecessor NLRB. As a consequence of these decisions (and those anticipated in the future), employers should prepare to adapt to changes in the labor law environment.

All Council Event – Get It Right Today, Not Tomorrow

Posted on December 2, 2010

Guest Speaker: Mercedes Ramirez Johnson

When you’re 21, you have your entire life ahead of you…

…at least that’s what Mercedes Ramirez Johnson thought on the morning of her twenty-first birthday. But by day’s end, her picture-perfect life was shattered – her parents and 158 other people were dead, and she was critically injured, stranded in the mountains of Colombia.

Mercedes knows from hard-earned experience the dangers of assuming there will always be a tomorrow. She is one of only four people who lived through what experts have called an “unsurvivable” airplane crash. After 18 harrowing hours stranded on a mountainside, doctors gave her only a 20 to 30 percent chance of survival.

During those hours, when she thought her life might be over, she prayed for a second chance at life and vowed that if given that gift, she would make it count. Today, Mercedes speaks to people and organizations worldwide, sharing her inspirational story and the concept that was first born on that mountain – the concept of Second Chance LivingTM.
